Council Meeting Minutes

November 15, 2011

 

Call to order: Lisa Bailey called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.

 

Present were: Lisa Bailey, Dave Nissen, Ann Ross, Larry Johnson, Nole Kennedy, Marci Padgett, Alyce Van Til, Peggy Lindsay, Dave Fredstrom, Don Senecal, Ron Werner and Dave Nagler Absent: Scott Johnson, Bill Rodgers

 

Devotions: Dave led the devotion sharing the concept of Òpractice-based religionÓ vs. Òbelief-based religionÓ where action supersedes words.

 

Approval of minutes – The October 2011 minutes were approved as submitted.

 

Financial Report : Larry reported that OctoberÕs giving was a bit better, though we still have a negative balance after having borrowed from designated funds.

 

Business:

1.     Don Senecal reported that the Stewardship Ministry team will provide quarterly updates on NativityÕs giving of time, talent and finances. This will occur via newsletter, emails, temple talks. The team will highlight

a.    end of year giving with tax advantages

b.    our automatic deduction program available at Nativity.

2.     Dave Nissen reported for the property team that:

a.    the ADA access is nearly complete and will come in under budget

b.    the property team is very happy for the designated line item for Headstart maintenance issues and will soon replace the back door leading to the patio from the Education wing

c.     the team is moving forward with the refurbishment of the Nativity sign on Knott and Brosterhous. When funds are secured, the refurbishment will move forward.

3.     Allyce reported for the Food Pantry:

a.    44% increase in families served this year

b.    Expenditures are up 85% this year to $5275, plus lots of free food is acquired

c.     14-20 volunteers help each month in this ministry with 142 volunteer hours given.

 

Staff Reports:

Ron

1.     Ron is formulating stronger policies than are already in place for youth leadership at Nativity. There will be a leadership training for appropriate behaviors in youth ministry held November 27th. This will be followed up with another Darkness to Light training for volunteers of our youth ministry and new staff.

2.     Monday and Wednesday youth programming is going well!

 

Pr. Dave

1.     Dave announced that he has been presented with and will accept a new call to a ministry in San Bernardino, CA beginning on January 1, 2012. Staff now knows of his decision and a letter of explanation will be sent to the congregation on Wednesday, November 16, 2011. It is with mixed emotion that Dave leaves Nativity.

2.     Regarding the proposed Luther/Bonhoeffer trip to Germany: Dave asked the council what its desire is as to whether the trip should be cancelled, led by another member of Nativity or if Dave Nagler would continue to lead the journey.

a.    Motion: Give those signed up for the trip the chance to voice their opinion if the tour should continue if Dave Nagler is leading it or not.

                                               i.     A decision will be made then, council gave its assent for Dave to lead it if the group still wants to go.

                                              ii.     Motion passed with 7 yeas and 1 abstention.

 

Announcements:

1.     Thursday Dec. 1st at 7:00 pm is suggested for the council to meet regarding our next step to securing an interim pastor.

2.     The next council meeting was changed to Dec. 13th at 7:00 pm to accommodate Christmas time.

 

The Council meeting was closed with prayer at 8:40 pm.
