Nativity Orchard

September 14th, 2009

Work will begin this month on the Orchard. To prepare the site we will remove a few Juniper trees in order to provide more sunlight; Shut off the irrigation to the area; Mark the existing irrigation heads so they can be removed next spring and replaced with drip irrigation lines to the new trees and planting areas; Cover the entire area with 6 inches of soil builder ground cover and begin building a fence around the site.

There is an existing Crabapple tree on the orchard site that was given by Walt and Mary Ellen Larkins to Dick and Phyllis Sutherland in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary on September 28, 1996. The memorial tree will become a focal point and identified with a plaque. New fruit trees will be available for purchase by members and friends of Nativity. Four trees have been purchased to date in memory of family members and special events. The purchase price is per tree is $40.00 and they will be ordered in early October for delivery and planting in the spring of 2010. Jan Ward will partner with us by donating equipment and employees at planting time. All of the project cost will be paid for from the remainder of the $10,000 gift received from Jan and Jody Ward in December of 2008.

A draft master plan designed by Tyler Pratt is available in the Narthex for your review and comment. If you have questions please call Richard Berg at 312-8663 or Ron Boldenow at 318-0579.
